Where to Stay

Hotels Near Tbilisi Airport: the ibis, the Tbilisi Sea and Avlabari

Tbilisi Airport has one hotel you can walk to. Here is when to book it, and where to stay in town for odd flight times.

Tbilisi Airport has exactly one hotel you can walk to, the ibis, and the city center is only 25 to 30 minutes away by car, which changes the usual airport hotel math. Here's what you need to know about the hotels near the terminal, when a night at the airport makes sense, and which part of town I'd pick instead for a late landing or a dawn departure.

Hotels near Tbilisi Airport compared

Shota Rustaveli Tbilisi International Airport sits about 17 km southeast of the center, past the apartment blocks of Samgori and Varketili. Those districts are residential, and hotels thin out fast once you leave the center, so the real choice is between the one hotel next to the terminal, one big resort hotel a short drive away, and a room in town on the left bank, the same side of the river as the airport.

These are the places I'd look at, from the closest to the terminal outward.

Should you stay near the airport or in the city?

For most trips I'd skip the airport hotel. The drive into town is short, Bolt runs around the clock, and a room in the center puts your first breakfast and your first walk through the Old Town right outside the door rather than a car ride away. Everything in the center is a 25 to 35 GEL Bolt from the terminal, so I'd choose the neighborhood for the days that follow, the same way you'd decide where to stay in Tbilisi on any trip, and only then think about the airport.

The ibis earns its keep at the awkward hours: a plane that lands at 2 am after a long day, a departure before dawn, or a night between two flights when you have no plans to see the city at all. This is how I'd decide.

ibis Tbilisi Airport, the only hotel you can walk to

The ibis opened in 2024 as the first international hotel right next to Tbilisi Airport, and it's still the only one you can reach on foot. It sits about 500 m from the terminal, a 5 to 10 minute walk with a suitcase, in a new building with 72 rooms, a lobby bar with a terrace, a fitness room and a yoga studio, and 4 meeting rooms for up to 60 people.

The rooms are standard modern ibis: the brand's Sweet Bed, a desk, warm wood and bright colors, and proper sound and light insulation, which matters this close to the runway. The front desk and the restaurant, L'avion, run around the clock, so you can land at 2 am, eat something hot and be asleep within the hour. Luggage storage is free, and there's parking on site.

It's a 3-star chain hotel, so it sits in the city's 3-star price band rather than the boutique one, and Accor's loyalty program earns points here like at any other ibis. Who I'd send there:

  • Late landings, when the last bus has gone and you'd rather start the trip with a short walk than a night drive.
  • Dawn departures, where a 4 am checkout and 10 minutes on foot beat a car across the city.
  • Layovers of a single night between two flights, with no plans to go into town.
  • Drivers. If you're renting a car in Georgia and collecting it at the airport, the on-site parking makes the ibis an easy first night before you hit the road.

Where it's the wrong choice: any night you want to see Tbilisi. The Old Town is about 15 km away, and a 25 to 35 GEL Bolt each way to go out for dinner wipes out the point of staying here.

The hotel doesn't run a shuttle. The walk is short and flat, but with heavy bags in rain or July heat, a Bolt for the few hundred meters to departures is the easier option.

Hualing Tbilisi, the resort hotel by the Tbilisi Sea

Photo: Google Maps

The next closest big hotel is Hotels & Preference Hualing Tbilisi, a 5-star tower in the Hualing development beside the Tbilisi Sea, the reservoir on the city's northeast edge. It's about 11 to 13 km from the terminal by road, roughly 15 minutes in a car, and the hotel runs an airport shuttle for a fee.

It has about 250 rooms, a 25 m indoor pool, a children's pool, a kids' club and mini-golf, which makes it the one airport-area hotel I'd pick for a family, or for a long layover when you want a swim more than a sightseeing walk. In winter, when the outdoor swimming pools in Tbilisi are shut, an hour in that indoor pool is the best cure I know for a night flight.

The trade is distance from everything else. Hualing is on the city's edge, so the Old Town is a car ride away and there's little to walk to beyond the hotel and the reservoir shore. I'd treat it as a place to rest between flights or before a long drive, not as a base for seeing the city.

Avlabari, the closest central neighborhood to the airport

If you'd rather wake up in the city, Avlabari, the old Armenian quarter on the left bank, is where I'd stay for an airport night. Bus 337 from the airport stops right outside Avlabari metro, and the official airport taxi booth charges its lower 60 GEL fare as far as Avlabari, against 80 GEL for anywhere beyond.

The rest of the city is easy from here too. Avlabari is one stop from Liberty Square on Line 1 of the Tbilisi metro, the Old Town is a walk across Metekhi Bridge, and the minibuses for Tbilisi to Yerevan trips leave from beside the metro station. Rooms run about 60 to 120 GEL a night, cheaper than the Old Town for the same standard, and the best of them look back across the river at Narikala.

The Sheraton at Telavi Street 20 opened in 1991 as the first international hotel in Tbilisi and the whole South Caucasus. It has 220 rooms, a spa, gyms and 12 conference rooms, and it's the big, quiet, everything-on-site hotel I'd book for a business trip that ends with an early flight. Of the luxury hotels in Tbilisi, it's the one on the airport side of the river, which takes the river crossing out of a 4 am ride.

Sandali Metekhi Boutique Hotel

Sandali sits on Viktor Jorbenadze Street by the river below Metekhi, a 24-room boutique hotel with a pillow menu and a welcome drink. Its suites include one of about 50 m² with its own terrace and a glass suite, and it's the place in Avlabari I'd pick for a couple on a short trip who want something more personal than a big chain.

Brim Tbilisi and Alphabet Hotel

Two smaller places round out Avlabari. Brim Tbilisi, at Abdushelishvili Street 12 to 14, was the first solar-powered hotel in the neighborhood, and its rooms have hand-painted walls. Alphabet Hotel at 3 Telavi Street is about 10 minutes' walk from the metro, close enough to arrive on bus 337 with a backpack and walk the rest.

Other central areas for a late arrival or early flight

Outside Avlabari, the whole center sits within the same 25 to 35 GEL Bolt ride of the terminal, so the airport barely changes the choice. What changes is how easy the last few hundred meters are at 2 am with a suitcase.

Fabrika is the cheap and cheerful answer for a solo traveler: Fabrika's hostel and private rooms sit in an old Soviet sewing factory, the courtyard bars stay busy late, and the cheapest dorm bed, in a 12-bed room, costs about 32 to 35 GEL a night. The Old Town and Sololaki are where I'd rather spend the days that follow, but on a 2 am arrival I'd pay for the Bolt to the door rather than drag a case up their lanes. The best hotels in Tbilisi mostly sit on the right bank in those areas, all well within half an hour of the terminal.

Hotel prices near the airport and in the center

The ibis sits in the city's 3-star band, the Hualing in the 4 to 5-star one, and the cheapest rooms are all in town, not out by the runway. These are the 2026 bands per night, in lari, for the whole city.

For a single night between flights, the ibis and a central 3-star cost about the same, so the choice comes down to the 25 to 35 GEL Bolt each way and the hour it takes. Below the 3-star band, the guesthouses and hostels on the list of budget hotels in Tbilisi are all in town. Book 2 to 4 weeks ahead for May, June, September and October, when the city fills up.

Arriving late: check-in and the ride to your hotel

The terminal is open all night, but the city's public transport isn't. Bus 337 runs from about 7 am to 11 pm, and once passport control and the baggage belt are done on a busy night, I wouldn't count on the last one for a plane that lands after 10 pm. After that, your options are Bolt at about 25 to 35 GEL, a little more at night, the official taxi booth at 60 or 80 GEL, or a prebooked transfer from about 53 GEL for the car.

Bolt is what I'd use. Open it on the free airport Wi-Fi while you wait for your bags, see the real fare before you walk out, and meet the car in the pickup zone outside. At that hour any central hotel is a 25 to 30 minute ride away, and getting from Tbilisi Airport to the city center by Bolt costs about the same whichever neighborhood you booked.

The hotel end matters as much as the ride. Before you book a central room for a late landing, check that someone is on the desk overnight, or message the hotel with your flight time. An apartment with self check-in solves the key problem, but some hosts charge a full or half night for an arrival in the small hours, so ask first.

Sort your money and your phone before you leave the terminal. The ATMs from TBC and Bank of Georgia sit on the right of the arrivals exit, and they beat the exchange desks, which pay 10 to 15% worse than offices in the city; money in Georgia is mostly cards anyway, but a little cash helps on the first night. Magti's stand in arrivals is open around the clock and sells a 20 GEL tourist package with 15 GB for 30 days, the quickest way to get a Georgian SIM card working before you order the car.

Early flights: getting from your hotel to the airport

For a departure before about 6 am, the ibis is the easy answer: you set the alarm, walk 10 minutes and check in. From anywhere in the center, it's a Bolt, because bus 337 doesn't start until about 7 am and there's no metro to the airport.

At 3 or 4 am the roads are empty, and a Bolt from Avlabari, the Old Town or Vera reaches the terminal in about 25 minutes, often less. Fares run a little higher at night, but they're fixed in the app when you book, so there's no haggling at the curb. The same app covers taxis in Tbilisi for the rest of the trip at 3 to 8 GEL a ride across the center.

A later flight changes the math. Morning rush hour slows the road out east, so for a departure between about 9 am and noon I'd leave the center a little earlier than the 25 to 30 minute drive suggests.

Sleeping at Tbilisi Airport

You're allowed to sleep in the terminal, and on a very late landing or a very early departure plenty of people do. The departures hall is the most comfortable area, with the most seating, though it gets busy as the early flights check in. The Wi-Fi is free with no login, so you can sort out the morning from your phone.

I'd only do it for a few hours, never a full night. If you have a layover long enough to need real sleep, the ibis is 10 minutes away on foot, and a proper bed before a long flight is worth paying for. If you arrive at 2 am and plan to head into town at first light, a few hours in departures and the first 337 at about 7 am get you into the center at the same time as breakfast, which in most cafes starts around 8 am.

Key takeaways

  • The ibis Tbilisi Airport is the only hotel you can walk to: 72 rooms, about 500 m from the terminal, with a front desk and restaurant open around the clock.
  • Hualing Tbilisi by the Tbilisi Sea is the resort option, 11 to 13 km out, with indoor pools and a kids' club.
  • For most flights a central hotel wins, since the center is 17 km and a 25 to 35 GEL Bolt away.
  • Avlabari is the airport-friendly part of the center, with bus 337 at its metro and the cheaper 60 GEL taxi booth zone.
  • Book the ibis for landings after midnight, departures before about 6 am and single nights between flights.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a hotel at Tbilisi Airport?

Yes. The ibis Tbilisi Airport opened in 2024 about 500 m from the terminal, a 5 to 10 minute walk, and it's the only hotel within walking distance. It has 72 rooms and a front desk and restaurant open 24 hours.

How far is Tbilisi Airport from the city center?

About 17 km. A car or Bolt takes 25 to 30 minutes to Freedom Square at normal traffic, and bus 337 takes around an hour with all its stops.

Is it worth staying near Tbilisi Airport?

Only for awkward flight times. For a landing after midnight, a departure before about 6 am or a one-night layover, the ibis saves you a night drive; for anything else, a central hotel puts you next to the sights for the same price, with the airport 25 to 35 GEL away by Bolt.

Can you sleep at Tbilisi Airport?

Yes, sleeping in the terminal is allowed, and the departures hall is the most comfortable spot. The airport is open 24 hours with free Wi-Fi, but for a full night I'd walk the 10 minutes to the ibis instead.

Does the ibis Tbilisi Airport have a shuttle?

No, the hotel doesn't run one. The walk to the terminal takes 5 to 10 minutes on a flat route, and with heavy bags in bad weather a short Bolt ride is the easier option.

Which area of Tbilisi is best for an early flight?

Avlabari. It's on the same side of the river as the airport, inside the airport taxi booth's cheaper zone, and a pre-dawn Bolt from there reaches the terminal in about 25 minutes.

How much is a taxi from Tbilisi Airport to a hotel in the center?

About 25 to 35 GEL by Bolt, a little more late at night. The official taxi booth charges a fixed 60 GEL to Avlabari and 80 GEL to anywhere beyond, and drivers at the exit ask 40 to 100 GEL.
